**High Desert Middle School Debuts Mariachi Band**
High Desert Middle School (HDMS) in Bend, Oregon recently celebrated a momentous occasion with the debut performance of its first-ever Mariachi band. The students and staff showcased their talent last week, performing the song *Arboles de Barranca* to an audience of 600 people. The performance inspired a heartfelt sing-along, leaving the room filled with joy and emotion.
The creation of the HDMS Mariachi Band was a collaborative effort involving multiple groups. The Cascade School of Music, Just Joe's Music, and Sunday Guitars all contributed by providing instruments and music equipment. Additionally, support from the Bend Education Association through a generous grant made the program possible. Fundraising efforts are still underway to secure authentic Mariachi Moños (ties) for the band members.
Brenda Simmons, a teacher at HDMS, played a key role in bringing the program to life, dedicating extensive effort to launch the band. The school’s administrators and schedule coordinators also showed flexibility and vision in adding the new program to the curriculum.
“Courage from the students, persistence from staff, and support from the entire HDMS community made this happen,” said Sarah Owen, HDMS Band Director.
This debut performance marks a significant milestone for the school and highlights the collective dedication of the HDMS community in fostering new opportunities for students. Fundraising continues to support the program’s growth.
