Improper Ash Disposal Causes Southwest Bend Fire

Staff Report / Bendlocal.org

A home fire in Southwest Bend this week was caused by the improper disposal of hot ashes, according to Bend Fire & Rescue. This year, improper disposal of hot embers and ashes has been identified as one of the leading causes of fires in the area.

Bend Fire & Rescue reminds residents to always assume that ashes are hot, as they can remain hot enough to ignite combustible materials for several days. Ashes removed from wood-burning appliances should be placed in a non-combustible metal container with a metal lid, and kept outside of the home, away from any combustible materials.

Even ashes that have been wetted down should be stored in a metal container for several days until they are completely cool before disposal. Residents are cautioned not to underestimate how long ashes can smolder.

Bend Fire & Rescue encourages everyone to prioritize safety and proper disposal practices to prevent fires.
