Survey: One-Third of Americans Ignore Smoke Alarms

Staff Report / FLXlocal.org

A recent nationwide survey reveals that approximately one-third of Americans do not test their smoke alarms. According to the findings, only 7% of respondents test their smoke alarms at least once a month, while 33% never conduct tests. The survey indicates that a significant majority, 61%, test their smoke alarms less often than monthly.

On the positive side, 71% of the public reported that they know how to install smoke alarms, and 77% are aware of how to maintain them.

In Geneva, NY, Geneva Firefighters Local 2859 is urging residents to routinely check their smoke alarms and to replace batteries every six months or as needed. The Geneva Fire Department offers free installation of smoke detectors for those in need, along with assistance in changing batteries and guidance on how to test alarms. Residents can contact the fire marshal's office at 315-789-6966 for assistance. This is a non-emergency line and is not monitored 24/7; emergencies should be directed to 911.
