Mental Health: Assessing Symptoms and Seeking Help
Staff Report / FLXlocal.org
In assessing your mental health, it is essential to determine the level of interference your symptoms have on your daily life.
If you have mild symptoms that have lasted for less than two weeks, you might experience some trouble sleeping and feeling down, but you can still manage to complete your job, schoolwork, or housework. For these mild symptoms, self-care activities may be beneficial. These include engaging in social contact, whether virtual or in-person, exercising through aerobics or yoga, planning to talk to a trusted friend or family member, and maintaining a healthy diet.
If you notice that these mild symptoms do not improve or worsen despite your self-care efforts, it might be time to evaluate for more severe symptoms that have lasted for two weeks or longer. Severe symptoms include difficulty sleeping, changes in appetite resulting in unintentional weight loss or gain, a loss of interest in most activities, feelings of hopelessness or helplessness, and thoughts of death or self-harm.
For individuals experiencing severe symptoms, it is important to seek professional help. Available treatment options include psychotherapy, medications, and brain stimulation therapies.
If you find yourself in crisis, support is available 24/7. You can call or text the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline at 988, or chat online at 988lifeline.org. You can also text the Crisis Text Line by sending the word HELLO to 741741. These resources offer free and confidential services for anyone in need of assistance.
