World Rabies Day Promotes Vaccination and Awareness
Staff Report / FLXlocal.org
September 28 marks World Rabies Day, a global initiative aimed at raising awareness about the importance of rabies prevention. The Cayuga County Health Department emphasizes that rabies is 100% vaccine preventable, and encourages the community to take key precautions to strive for the goal of zero rabies-related deaths by 2030.
Residents are advised not to feed, touch, or adopt wild animals to reduce the risk of rabies transmission. It is also essential for pet owners to ensure that their pets are up-to-date on vaccinations. Keeping pets indoors at night and preventing them from roaming freely and unsupervised can further limit exposure to potential rabies carriers.
In the event of a bite or scratch from an animal, it is crucial to wash the affected area immediately with soap and water and to consult a healthcare provider without delay.
For additional information on rabies prevention, individuals are encouraged to visit the Cayuga County Health Department’s website at https://www.cayugacounty.us/513/Bats-Rabies.
