City offices in Bend, Oregon will be closed on September 2, 2024, in observance of Labor Day. Labor Day has historical roots dating back to September 1882 when unions in New York City organized a parade to celebrate their members and show support for unions. The parade inspired other regions to hold similar celebrations, leading to Labor Day becoming a state holiday in Oregon, Massachusetts, New York, New Jersey, and Colorado by 1887.

Labor Day is also known as the unofficial end of Hot Dog season, with Americans consuming around 7 billion hot dogs between Memorial Day and Labor Day, according to the National Hot Dog and Sausage Council. Additionally, a long-standing tradition dictates that wearing white clothing after Labor Day is considered a fashion faux pas, as it once symbolized being in vacation mode.

As residents of Bend, Oregon enjoy their Labor Day holiday, they are encouraged to observe the significance of the day and appreciate the historical significance and traditions associated with this national holiday.
