Bend, Oregon to Observe Juneteenth with City Office Closures

by / Bendlocal.org

City offices in Bend, Oregon will be closed on June 19th to observe Juneteenth. Juneteenth marks the day in 1865 when the last enslaved Americans in the United States learned they were free. This day, also known as Juneteenth Independence Day, Freedom Day, second Independence Day, and Emancipation Day, has been celebrated by Black Americans for generations with parades, street festivals, musical performances, and cookouts. While Juneteenth became a federal holiday in 2021, its significance has long been recognized within the Black community.

For those interested in learning more about the history of Juneteenth and its origins, additional information can be found in a resource provided by NPR linked by the City of Bend government. Additionally, local Black-led groups in Bend advocate for the values of Juneteenth through various initiatives. The Father’s Group Juneteenth Jubilee, the Central Oregon Black Leaders Assembly Good Deeds Program, and Central Oregon Earthseeds Mutual Aid are among the organizations upholding the spirit of Juneteenth through their work in the community. Further information about these programs can be accessed through the provided links.
