VA Medical Center Marks National Hernia Awareness Month
Washington DC VA Medical Center said National Hernia Awareness Month is observed every June to educate the public about hernias.
The center said a hernia happens when an organ or fatty tissue squeezes through a weak spot in the surrounding muscle or connective tissue. It listed causes and risk factors that include muscle weakness, straining from coughing, sneezing, or constipation, heavy lifting without proper core support, and pregnancy due to strain on the abdominal wall and muscles.
The post urged people to “spot the signs early” to help prevent serious health complications, including a visual bulge in the abdomen or groin area, discomfort such as a dull ache, pressure, or burning at the bulge site, and worsening or sharp pain when bending over, coughing, or lifting heavy objects.
Washington DC VA Medical Center said people who suspect they have a hernia should speak with their primary care provider. It added that small hernias that do not cause pain may be monitored, while others may require minimally invasive surgical repair.
