**Local Teacher Wins Prestigious National Award**
Bend-La Pine Schools announced that Stephanie Johnson, a first-grade teacher at Pine Ridge Elementary School in Bend, Oregon, has been honored with the Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching. This prestigious award, administered by the National Science Foundation, recognizes outstanding teachers for their contributions to the teaching and learning of STEM subjects (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics).
Ms. Johnson will receive a certificate signed by the President of the United States, a $10,000 award, and an invitation to an awards ceremony in Washington, D.C.
Stephanie Johnson has been a dedicated part of Pine Ridge Elementary for 16 years. She began her career at the school as a special education teacher for six years before transitioning to teaching first grade, a role she has held for the past decade. Her approach to mathematics focuses on creating lifelong mathematical thinkers by building foundational skills and connecting students’ experiences and knowledge to the subject. Additionally, she emphasizes developing each student’s “mathematics identity,” encouraging them to see themselves as capable problem solvers.
Beyond the classroom, Stephanie contributes to her school district as a member of Bend La Pine’s Mathematics Leadership Academy. She also leads professional development sessions for other teachers, sharing best practices to enhance education across the district.
“This award represents the undivided efforts of educators who work tirelessly to provide high-quality education for all students in mathematics,” Stephanie said. “I hope to continue to inspire the mathematician inside of each of my students, so they see themselves as the problem solvers of the future.”
Bend-La Pine Schools congratulated Stephanie on her well-deserved achievement, acknowledging her lasting impact on her students and the education community.
