Middle School Student Arrested for Weapon Possession
Staff Report / Albanylocal.org
A 13-year-old student from North Albany Middle School was arrested on the morning of October 23, 2024, for possession of a weapon. The incident began when school staff discovered a loaded 9mm handgun on a retaining wall in a nearby park, which is used by the school for recess.
At approximately 9:10 a.m., staff notified the Albany Police, who recovered the handgun upon arrival. During their investigation, officers found that school staff had seen the student near the area before the school day began, but he entered the school following normal security procedures and was not carrying the handgun at that time.
The handgun, which was reported stolen to the Atlanta Police Department, led to the student facing several charges, including Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the 2nd and 4th degrees, as well as Criminal Possession of Stolen Property in the 4th degree. The minor's name has not been released due to his age.
He was arraigned in Albany County Family Court later that day and has been placed under home confinement with an electronic monitoring device.
