**Linden Public Schools Annual Breast Cancer Awareness Walk Raises Nearly $3,000**

Linden, NJ – On Saturday, October 12, Linden Public Schools hosted its annual Breast Cancer Awareness Walk at Tiger Stadium, drawing over 270 participants in a community-wide display of support. The event raised nearly $3,000 for the Susan G. Komen Foundation.

Participants, including survivors, caregivers, school staff, elected officials, and community members, wore bright pink T-shirts bearing the slogan “Every Step Closer to a CURE.” Assistant Superintendent Annabel Louis expressed her joy at the turnout, stating, “Having approximately 270 people register for such an important and meaningful cause is truly worth celebrating.”

Linden Public Schools Superintendent Atiya Y. Perkins also highlighted the significance of the event, leading a moment of silence for those who lost their battle with breast cancer and thanking the community for their support. “Together, we show unity, we show support, and we believe in hope,” Perkins said.

Mayor Derek Armstead emphasized the need for community unity in fighting breast cancer, calling it a "common enemy" that requires faith and collective strength to overcome.

In New Jersey, approximately 7,600 women are diagnosed with breast cancer each year, making awareness events like this vital for supporting research, early detection, and treatment advancements.

Before the walk commenced, an energetic warm-up led by Pelagia Lambrakopoulos, a fifth-grade teacher, energized participants to the anthem "I Will Survive." The walk featured a special lap for survivors, which was met with cheers and applause, honoring their resilience. Caregivers were also recognized for their crucial support roles throughout the cancer journey.

Among the survivors, Kim Kefalas, an 11-year survivor and event organizer, shared her excitement about the growth of the event. “To see it all come together with over 270 participants is just amazing,” Kefalas said.

The event also highlighted the contributions of caregivers, represented by approximately 50 participants. Ryan Divani, who cares for his mother, a double cancer survivor, spoke on the challenges and rewards of caregiving.

Activities throughout the day included a Paint and Sip station, face painting, and bracelet making, with strong support from local organizations and businesses. Volunteers helped ensure the event ran smoothly, with over 60 individuals showing up to assist.

Looking ahead, Kefalas plans to increase participation for next year's event, aiming for around 400 participants. The fundraising totals will continue to grow throughout October, with final amounts announced on social media.

As emphasized during the walk, community unity and support are key components in the fight against breast cancer. Linden Public Schools looks forward to continuing this important tradition.
