San Francisco Shifts to Innovation Cycle, Highlights Positive Trends

Staff Report / sanfranlocal.org

In a recent article from the University of San Francisco Magazine, professors from USF reflect on the state of San Francisco. Professor Billy Riggs, an expert in public administration and city planning, disputes claims that the city is in a downward spiral, stating that San Francisco is transitioning from a down cycle to an innovation cycle.

John Coughlan, director of the MS in Entrepreneurship and Innovation program at USF, highlights that the San Francisco Bay Area continues to be the top location for venture capital investments globally. According to a report from Ernst and Young, the Greater San Francisco area received $9.5 billion in investment in the third quarter of 2023, surpassing other major cities like Boston and New York.

Riggs also points out positive changes in the city, noting that San Francisco has become greener over the years with improved access to parks and open spaces. The city has also implemented measures to make it more pedestrian and cyclist-friendly, such as creating permanent “slow streets” where non-automotive traffic has priority.

Mayor London Breed, a USF alum, emphasizes the city's efforts to embrace technology and sustainability, stating that San Francisco is leading in artificial intelligence innovation, cleanliness, safety, and inclusivity. She also mentions a decrease in crime rates and a resurgence in tourism, indicating positive trends for the city.
